When Is the Btw Season of This Is Us Coming Back

  • This Is Us's Isaac Aptaker and Dan Fogelman opened up about the hit NBC drama's future in an interview with Deadline.
  • There will be two more seasons of This Is Us after season 4, according to Isaac.
  • The show's ending has been planned out since the very beginning.

Bad news, This Is Us fans: Your beloved NBC drama might be coming to an end sooner than you think. In a February 2019 interview with Deadline, executive producer Isaac Aptaker and show creator Dan Fogelman opened up about the future of the show — and it might not be what you had hoped to hear.

How many seasons of This Is Us will there be?

If Isaac's rough estimate is to be believed, we're looking at six. The showrunners have several seasons' worth of plot already outlined, but that's it: The series finale is already written, and in what Isaac told Deadline will be "about three seasons," we'll stop hearing from the Pearson family entirely.

So wait, is This Is Us being canceled?

Definitely not. As Sterling K. Brown confirmed to Entertainment Weekly in April 2019, the season 3 finale flash-forward scene (where Randall visits an older Rebecca lying in a bed in Kevin's house), is what the rest of the remaining seasons will be building toward.

The show's seemingly early ending is actually intentional, despite the show's high ratings: Isaac told Deadline that Dan has had an ending for the show in mind since the very beginning, and they're sticking to that plan with the hope that viewers will find the grand finale "elegant" and "satisfying."

"I would hope that when we reach our ending, people think it's a really satisfying end place that makes sense, and it feels like they've watched something that is a complete piece of work because that's really how we're trying to plan it," Isaac said. "We've had this end in mind for a long time, so we're able to plan for it and try to make it feel like it's a whole, as opposed to a series that's going to go endlessly."

Looking at the bright side of things, this approach could actually be good news for fans of This Is Us: Isaac and Dan's commitment to their show's timeline is a sign that every last scene of the show has a purpose ... and that the hit drama won't be unnecessarily stretched out to the point of viewer disinterest. (Believe it or not, even some of the biggest fans of shows like Grey's Anatomy have accused showrunners of doing just that.)

Still, we'll be sad to see the Pearson family go.
